A Journey Toward Innovation
HoneyQuote is a Florida-based InsurTech startup backed by NSI Insurance Group. The platform is designed to disrupt the home insurance market by empowering homeowners to discover, compare, and receive real-time insurance quotes through a seamless and intuitive user experience. Concurrently, it provides tools for insurance brokers to efficiently manage their customers, operating at the intersection of consumer technology and financial services.
The Challenge
HoneyQuote had initially built their Minimum Viable Product (MVP) internally. As the company began gaining significant traction and achieving product-market fit, they recognized that the existing architecture was a bottleneck to future growth.
Scalability Limitations: The existing application was built as a Monolith, which made it increasingly difficult to update, maintain, and scale to handle growing user traffic and data volume.
Performance Constraints: The original Relational database layer was struggling to meet the necessary data availability and performance requirements as the platform's complexity and data load increased.
Need for Robust Architecture: Having validated their business model, HoneyQuote required a robust and scalable application built by a trusted technology partner to support their expansion plans.
HoneyQuote hired WeKan to develop the next iteration of their web application, a complete rebuild designed to address these core architectural and performance challenges.
The Solution – Architecting HoneyQuote V2.0
WeKan was engaged for Application Modernisation and Continuous Product Development. The project objective was to entirely re-build the web application, helping HoneyQuote migrate from their existing Monolith to a Micro-services driven architecture and transitioning their data layer from a Relational database to a NoSQL (MongoDB) solution.
Technology Stack:
Azure, Node.js, MongoDB, React.js, Gael (GenAI)
WeKan began with a comprehensive assessment of HoneyQuote’s V1 architecture and a thorough code audit. This process included analyzing user behavior and traction metrics, which served as the foundation for designing the improved User Experience of HoneyQuote 2.0.
User-Centric Design: Detailed user stories were crafted, followed by an iterative design process involving navigation flows and wireframes. This was done in close collaboration with HoneyQuote’s teams and customers to ensure the new interface aligned with business goals and end-user needs.
Micro-services Architecture: In parallel with UI development, the engineering team defined the full system architecture, designing a modern, Micro-services based backend optimized for performance and scalability. The database was migrated to MongoDB to better handle high data availability and performance requirements.
Agile Development with Acceleration: After a six-week combined Design and Architecture phase, development kicked off in an agile environment with two-week release cycles. By leveraging agile practices and the Gael (GenAI) accelerator, WeKan significantly increased the speed and efficiency of the build.
HoneyQuote V2.0 was successfully built and launched over a 12-month period, creating a robust, high-performance platform for the future.

Outcomes
The architectural modernization resulted in significant gains in scalability, performance, and efficiency, cementing a long-term partnership with WeKan:
Performance Improvement
The new architecture delivered a substantial 63% increase in average query performance, ensuring a faster and smoother user experience.
Accelerated Development
The agile approach, combined with the use of GenAI accelerators, led to an acceleration in development by 2.5X overall.
Cost and Timeline Reduction
The efficiency gains allowed for a reduction in development cost by 40%, significantly lowering the overall timeline and expenditure.
In summary, HoneyQuote's shift to the new platform has significantly improved its scalability and performance, cutting timelines and costs by nearly 50%. This impressive achievement has set the stage for a long-term partnership, with WeKan dedicated to offering continuous development support for over two years, helping HoneyQuote to keep thriving and innovating.
