A Journey Toward Innovation
RideKleen is not just a fleet servicing company, it’s an innovation company – disrupting the industry and exciting customers with new products and services that solve challenging problems. It is also a sustainability company – committed to improving the world around us by making the industry more environmentally responsible. Founded in 2013, RideKleen initially provided mobile cleaning services to car fleets, sending technicians to wherever vehicles were. The company was acquired by Cox Automotive in 2018 and has since become a national leader in eco-conscious, full-service fleet cleaning, disinfection, and maintenance, serving some of the largest car rental and rideshare companies in the U.S.
Mobile technology has always been central to RideKleen’s operations. Operations managers and service technicians rely on RideKleen’s mobile app to track vehicle location, timing, and job details, giving managers a real-time view of work as it’s completed.
The Challenge
When RideKleen first started using Realm Mobile Database in 2018, the legacy mobile application, built on Claris FileMaker for iPads, lacked any data synchronization with the backend. As a result, the technology was clunky, expensive to maintain, and limited operations staff and service technicians on the ground. Service technicians could record jobs but had to sync data manually by plugging devices into a PC, and data loss was common. App performance issues sometimes required reinstalls, which further risked losing locally stored data. To prevent data loss, technicians resorted to double-entry in cloud spreadsheets. All of these inefficiencies led to delays in accurate reporting and created operational challenges for administrative staff.
The Solution – A Phased Modernization Strategy
The first step in the modernization was centralizing the backend data in a relational database and replatforming the mobile app on Realm Mobile Database. This offline-first mobile app allowed service technicians to continue work even without network connectivity, reading and writing data locally and syncing automatically when devices were online.
Using Realm and Kotlin, Wekan developed a new native Android app with a custom adapter to sync data between Realm and the backend. This architecture streamlined communication between field staff and operations, making it easier to update customers on the status of work. As RideKleen scaled within Cox Automotive, enterprise customers required customized workflows for tasks like verifying gas levels or documenting returned keys. To meet these needs, Wekan migrated the system to AWS using MongoDB Atlas, Atlas Data Lake, and Realm, which provided a fully managed, scalable, and secure cloud-based data platform.

“Our business was always going to move beyond just car cleaning to preventative maintenance and other fleet service request, and we did not want to build custom workflow for each new customer. We wanted technology that allowed us to easily adapt to our clients’ needs.”
Pratik Patel, President of RideKleen
Wekan also rebuilt the Command Center web portal, enabling engineers and technicians to create and deploy custom services directly to the field. MongoDB Realm’s triggers and functions eliminated the need for extensive custom scheduling code. The combined system provides total visibility of work in progress through a custom dashboard, and all updates automatically propagate to mobile devices in real time.

Outcomes
RideKleen now enjoys a robust, scalable, and affordable data backbone that allows staff to work more effectively and provides operational updates and feedback in near real-time. The modernization eliminated manual processes, improved offline capabilities, and provided a cloud-native foundation for future growth.
Impact
With MongoDB Atlas on AWS, Realm, and Atlas Data Lake powering RideKleen’s end-to-end technology, the company can respond almost instantly to new customer needs. This agility has proven particularly valuable during the Covid-19 pandemic, when confidence in cleanliness is critical. Technicians deliver services reliably in the field, operations staff have better tools for managing workflows, and customers receive timely, accurate updates. The modernization not only addressed immediate operational pain points but also positioned RideKleen for continued growth and innovation under Cox Automotive.
